Park and street trees perform ecological services - a set of necessities we usually take for granted. According to a recent USDA Forest Service study, San Jose's trees remove 260 tons of pollution from the air every year, a service valued at $1.3 million, and currently are storing - or "sequestering" - 196,000 tons of carbon that if released into the atmosphere, would contribute to global warming.
